Mount Papandayan is a complex stratovolcano. At the summit, there are four large craters, and it contains active fumaroles fields. The 1772 eruption caused the NE flank to collapse, producing a catastrophic debris avalanche.  Since then only small eruptions had occurred prior to another explosive eruption that began in November 2002.
Mount Merapi is the most active volcano in Indonesia and has erupted regularly since 1548. Although smoke can be seen emerging from the mountain top at least 300 days a year, several eruptions have caused fatalities hot gas from a large explosion in 1994. Another large eruption occurred in 2006, shortly before the Yogyakarta earthquake.
